Technology I have used recently in my job

I would like to have a running theme going with this blog as the weeks go on. I would like to hear from you what types of technology you use in the field of Kinesiology. I imagine some will be closely related and some will be just things we happen to learn to do to make our jobs easier.

I will start - Seldom a day goes by that I am not glad I learned to use "Mail Merge" in Microsoft Word from and Excel Spreadsheet. I have found this to be very useful. I realized a few years back that I would be repeatedly communicating with some of the same groups of people. Mail merge has allowed me to create a "database" of names, grades, etc. once and then reuse it over and over and over again.

At this point when I realize I am going to work with a list of things and I might need to use it more than once (e.g., on a letter and on an envelope) I start by creating a spreadsheet to contain the information. Once I have the names, addresses, grades, etc. in the spreadsheet I can generate "personalized" letters, envelopes, emails, labels, etc. This proves to be a hugh timesaver. I would love to have my office staff perform this function but I am not sure they grasp the concept at this point.

Post a comment and let me know about a technology that enhances or frustrates your daily operations.

The blog is obviously about the current NBA Playoffs. It mostly just updates the highlight game of the night and gives a shor summary of what happened, along with a couple of comments or predictions from me.

As the Central Valley Conference (CVC) Sports Publicist, I figured why not start blogging about news related to our great teams.

Hey, look! A place to "post" comments that actually works :) Can we just submit all of our assignments as blogs (much easier)? Sorry, couldn't resist.

Hey yall, this Mark Beyer and I hope this works! This is all new to me, but you guys can check out what I have so far on my blog at coachbeyer.blogspot.com/ The title is "Coach". I'm no to sure what I am going to put on my blog yet but I'll think of something.

Coach Beyer said...

Is this where we leave a comment for the week 2 discussion question? I hope so! I am brand new to all this technology we are using now. I never thought that in Physical Education, we would even think to use a blog system. It seems really interesting and I hope to learn more about it. I would use it for advice fom other coaches and teachers on how to improve whatever it is that I'm working on.

Rick Eoff - I am going to assume this is the Discussion Board for "How I envision using blogs?" I never saw a thread on the BB Discussion Board.

I can envision using blogs for coaching water polo or any other sport. The blog can be a valuable tool or resource for ideas to improve my coaching. I can envision on my site "Water Polo Talk" having discussion from coaches all over the world about rule interpretations and strategies. I would also use the site to solicit new ideas on teaching fundamentals of the game (drills).

In summary, instead of traveling to a coaching clinic to get new ideas or have the opportunity to have live discussion with the presenter/elite coach, I can now have the same opportunity online at my convenience.

Hey, I finally made it! Thanks to your help! My name is Carolyn Payton and I never thought I'd get here. I started my blog the first day of this assignment and it was fun to create, but when it came to editing and publishing I ran into all kinds of trouble!
I set up my blog as an outdoor education site. I posted pictures of our trip. I have headed up Club Catalina for 16 years now so I thought this would be a fun project.
Check it out before I lose it again. :)

http://funtolearn-payton.blogspot.com

I always try to encourage my P.E. students to find activities that they enjoy to do outside of school and Club Catalina introduces them to a number of new activities. I have not included a lot of details yet but will add to it.

Payton said...

It's me again. Here are some way I envision myself using my blog:
*Nice way to communicate upcoming meetings and activities with my club members
*Post pictures after the trip so students can see and share with family members
*Help others trying to set-up an outdoor education program
*It's more colorful and exciting than an e-mail. Can reach more people
*I would include my own interesting travels

This is Angela Webb again and I currently use technology by the use of Aeries for attendance and submitting grades. I rely heavily on the use of e-mail as a means of communicating with staff, students, parents, community, and coaches. As president of the Coaches Association I occasionally use Publisher to create documents that are used for a varity events such as fundraiser flyers, coaching announcements, tickets, awards, programs....

Technology that definitely makes my job easier is a digital film editing system. Throughout the course of a season most basketball coaches watch hundredss of hours of film, and an editing system allows one to organize the film in an efficent manner.

Chris Fisher said...

I use a variety of technology in my teaching today. I use Aries/Eagle program to take attendance, view student information, and track grades. PowerPoint presentations are utilized 2-3 times a week. I am learning to incorporate video and still images off the Internet into my presentations. For my reading class, I use pre-recorded CD's that read the text as students follow along (EL Reading class). My email is my primary source of communication throughout the day. I soon will be branching off into digital video for our basketball program. There are endles possibilities for this medium: easy editing of game film, recruiting videos to be made, analyze practice sessions, individual workouts, and other team films, etc...
On Friday, I downloaded images from a digital camera into a software program and school, edited the imge, and pasted the image onto a printable document. I was shocked!

There are some great blogs that were created. It is amazing how polished the blog sites look with very little time. I can also see that you can get hooked working on these things also.

One area I use technology in is in making presentations within a training course I designed recently. A part of this technology is with a PowerPoint presentation. I instruct PowerPoint and share with students how to create animation, and how to include vido, pics, and video into their presentations. I also emphasize the do's and don't of PowerPoint.

A blog, as I am discovering, has endless possibilities in education. As an educator, I could post a question/discussion topic and ask the students to write a journal or reflective paper. Students who usually would not speak in class might post their thoughts and comments more freely. Students could be required to post a visual representation of a concept we are discussing. i.e. honesty, integrity, hustle. This not only incorporates technology, but it hits other modalities, and allows the student to do work with a medium they have fun with anyways!

An educator might also be able to see other educators blog site’s, read their thoughts, and pick up a useful idea. The blog is an excellent resource tool...although, my wife is starting too think I am a little obsessive!

I am getting my feet wet in "School Master". This program was implemented by my employer a few months ago. It is basically for instructors to imput their progress grades and final grades for the students. However, I wear multiple hats at my job. I am also a Drop-out Prevention Counselor so I also use the program to find student information such as phone numbers and addresses. School Master also has "Administrative" features which I am not privy to at this time. The more time I spend on the program, the more user-friendly it seems to be.

One of the technologies I have recently used in my job is the injury tracking software "SportsWare". We can keep track Athlete, Injury, Treatment, Medication, Sign-Out, Phone Book. Also it can organize data by athlete, sport, group with filters, sorts on each listing screen. This is a very neat and helpful software for athletic training field.

Yukeezie said...

Like Satsuki said before sportsware is very helpful to organize all injuries data and emergency/insurance information of athletes.
Especially, current, MDs start to use electrical medical record to store all information about patients, Sportsware helps to organize and collect all the medical information from doctors.

This is Coach Cunnings and my blog is called "The Winner". It has a catchy phrase that is designed to hook all coaches...the desire to win, to be what the world labels as "successful". But my vision is not one of winning games (in football) but to win souls. What can be more valuable than the souls of the young men that I am competing for?

I am, once again, finding myself becoming thankful that I took the courageous step to enter the masters program at FPU. It is easy to get stale in the system of education, but I was reminded this evening why I am entering into unchartered land!

I daily use an attendance program called classroom xp, which allows the user the opportunity to take roll, grades, disciple, academic history, medical history, parent/ guardian info. and tardiness. With this program I can instantly receive and share information within seconds.
